Welcome to Episode 5. Today we correct common sentence mistakes, learn rules and examples, practice, and finish with an extended phonetics master tip to improve pronunciation.
1. Incorrect Placement of "Only"
❌ Wrong: She only ate fruits yesterday.
✔️ Correct: She ate only fruits yesterday.
Rule: Place only before the word it modifies. Position changes meaning.
2. Wrong Comparatives with Longer Adjectives
❌ Wrong: She is more smarter.
✔️ Correct: She is smarter.
Rule: Use -er for short adjectives (tall → taller). Use more for longer adjectives (intelligent → more intelligent).
3. Negative with hardly / rarely / seldom
❌ Wrong: I don't hardly go out.
✔️ Correct: I hardly go out.
Words like hardly, rarely, seldom already express a negative idea — do not add "don't".
4. Very + Past Participles
❌ Wrong: I am very tireded.
✔️ Correct: I am very tired.
5. Articles with Superlatives
❌ Wrong: Mount Everest is highest mountain.
✔️ Correct: Mount Everest is the highest mountain.
6. Speak / Say / Tell / Talk
Say = express words (no direct object necessary).
Tell = give information to someone (needs object).
Speak = language or formal talking.
Talk = informal discussion.
Practice – Correct These
- He is more faster than me.
- I don't rarely go outside.
