PART B — Phonetics Part-3 (Advanced)
This section builds on previous episodes by strengthening **intonation**, **linking**, **weak forms**, **reductions**, and **connected speech** — the essentials of natural English speaking.
1) Rising & Falling Intonation
Yes/No questions → rising pitch. Statements & Wh-questions → falling pitch.
Practice: “Are you ready?” ↑ → “Yes, I’m ready.” ↓
2) Linking & Reductions
Words connect smoothly: “come on” → “c’mon”; “want to” → “wanna”; “going to” → “gonna.”
Practice: “What are you doing?” → “Whatcha doing?”
3) Weak Forms
Function words reduce in fast speech: to → /tə/; have → /əv/; and → /ən/.
Practice: “I want to meet her.” → “I wanna meet her.”
4) Stress & Meaning
Stress patterns change meaning: RECORD (noun) vs reCORD (verb). PRESENT (noun) vs preSENT (verb).
Practice: Repeat 5 noun-verb pairs aloud.
5) Final Consonant Clarity
Keep voiced consonants voiced (bad ≠ bat; bag ≠ back). Many learners unintentionally devoicing final consonants.
Practice: Hold the “d” in “bad.”
6) Connected Speech Drill
Sentence: “I have to ask him about the plan.”
- Slow: I / have / to / ask / him / about / the / plan
