Simple Present Tense — Day 5

WH Questions (What, Why, When, Where, Who, How)

Quick Revision — Day 1 to Day 4

So far, in Simple Present Tense, we have learned:

  • Day 1: Habits, facts, and general truths
  • Day 2: Positive sentences (verb + s / es)
  • Day 3: Negative sentences (do not / does not)
  • Day 4: Yes / No questions (Do / Does)

👉 Now in Day 5, we move to a very important step:

❓ Asking detailed questions using WH words

❓ What are WH Questions?

Questions that begin with WH words are called WH Questions.

We use them to:

  • Ask about actions or things
  • Ask for reasons
  • Ask about time and place
  • Ask about people
  • Ask about methods or manner

WH Words List (Remember These First)

WH Word Meaning
What Thing / Action

GOLDEN STRUCTURE (Very Important Rule)

WH Word + do / does + subject + base verb + ?

⚠️ Even when a WH word is used, do / does must be present (except WHO).

  • He teaches English.
    What does he teach?

SPECIAL CASE — WHO

In WHO questions, do / does is NOT used

  • Who teaches English?
  • Who works here?

❌ Who does teach English? (Wrong)

👉 Because WHO itself acts as the subject.

 Common Spoken Mistakes (Avoid These)

  • ❌ What you do?
    What do you do?
  • ❌ Where she works?
    Where does she work?
  • ❌ Why he comes late?
    Why does he come late?

Answering WH Questions

WH questions do not take Yes / No answers.
They need meaningful answers.

  • What do you do?
    👉 I am a teacher.
  • Where do you live?
    👉 I live in Hyderabad.

Practice Section (Think & Answer)

  1. ___ do you work? (Where / Why)
  2. ___ does he do? (What / When)
  3. ___ do you learn English? (Why / Who)
  4. ___ teaches English here? (Who / How)

(Think before checking the answers)
