 Episode 9 — Advanced English Sentence Corrections & Phonetics

In this lesson, we correct 7 advanced grammar mistakes, provide clear phonetics, and teach a real speaking method used by fluent speakers.

 7 Advanced Sentence Corrections (Wrong → Correct)

1) “Hardly… when…” (Advanced inversion)

❌ Wrong: Hardly I reached, when it started raining.

✔ Correct: Hardly had I reached when it started raining.

Phonetics: “hard-lee had eye reached wen it sta-ted rain-ing.”

2) “No sooner… than…” (Formal English)

❌ Wrong: No sooner I saw him, then I smiled.

✔ Correct: No sooner had I seen him than I smiled.

Phonetics: “no soon-er had eye seen than eye smyld.”

3) “If I were…” (imaginary situations)

❌ Wrong: If I was you, I would try.

✔ Correct: If I were you, I would try.

Phonetics: “if eye wer yoo, eye wud try.”

4) “Neither of them…” → Singular verb

❌ Wrong: Neither of them are ready.

✔ Correct: Neither of them is ready.

Phonetics: “nee-ther ov them iss red-ee.”

5) “By the time…” + past perfect

❌ Wrong: By the time he came, I finished.

✔ Correct: By the time he came, I had finished.

Phonetics: “by the tym he kaym, eye had fin-ished.”

6) “Hardly anyone…” → Singular

❌ Wrong: Hardly anyone know this.

✔ Correct: Hardly anyone knows this.

Phonetics: “hard-lee en-ee-won nohz this.”

7) “Let alone…” (negative extension)

❌ Wrong: He cannot walk, forget running.

✔ Correct: He cannot walk, let alone run.

Phonetics: “hee can-not wok, let uh-lohn run.”

  1. By the time I reached, the class had started.
    Phonetics: “by the tym eye reechd, the klas had star-ted.”
  2. Neither of us was ready.
    Phonetics: “nee-ther ov us woz red-ee.”
  3. No sooner had he called than I answered.
    Phonetics: “no soon-er had he kald than eye an-serd.”

๐ŸŽค Advanced Phonetics Training

1) Slow-Mouth Technique

Break the sentence into 3 blocks and speak slowly.

Example: I had finished the work.
Blocks: I-had / finished / the-work
Phonetics: “eye-had / fin-ished / the-wurk.”

2) Stress Words

Correct stress: re-LAX, a-MAZ-ing, to-MOR-row

3) Silent Letters

  • write → rite
  • knife → nife
  • psychology → sy-kol-o-jee
  • honest → on-ist

4) Real-Life Speaking Drill

Say these sentences slowly 3 times → natural 2 times.

  • I have been learning English.
  • You are supposed to finish this.
  • Let me know if you need help.
