Simple Present Tense — Day 3

Focus: Negative sentences • do / does logic • verb discipline • common spoken errors

This lesson is Day 3 of the 6-day Simple Present Tense mastery series — this is where many learners start making serious mistakes.

đŸŽ¯ Quick Recall from Day 1 & Day 2

✔ Simple Present talks about habits, facts, and permanent situations
✔ The subject controls the verb (s / es)
✔ If the subject is clear, half the grammar is solved

Now we move to an important shift:

👉 From positive sentences 👉 To negative sentences

 What Is a Negative Sentence?

A sentence that says an action does not happen, is not done, or is not true is a negative sentence.

• I work daily. → I do not work daily.
• She plays cricket. → She does not play cricket.

This is exactly where confusion begins for many learners.

Core Structure of Simple Present (Negative)

Subject + do / does + not + base verb

Two words are extremely important here:

  • do / does
  • base verb

👉 In negative sentences, the verb is always in base form.

 Rule 1: I / You / We / They → do not

• I do not like coffee.
• You do not understand the issue.
• We do not watch TV daily.
• They do not play cricket.

👉 No s / es on the verb
👉 Because do already controls the verb

Rule 2: He / She / It → does not

• He does not work on Sundays.
• She does not like spicy food.
• It does not rain in summer.
• Ramesh does not speak Hindi.

👉 Positive: works / plays
👉 Negative: does not work / play

A Very Common Mistake

❌ He does not works here.
❌ She does not likes coffee.

✅ He does not work here.
✅ She does not like coffee.

👉 After does, the verb must always be in base form.

 One Simple Life-Saver Logic

If the positive sentence has s / es, the negative sentence uses do / does

They never appear together.

👉 works ❌ do not works
👉 does not work ✅

Spoken English Reality

❌ He no work today.
❌ She not understand.

✅ He does not work today.
✅ She does not understand.

People may understand both — but correct English always uses do / does.

 Thinking Practice (Take Your Time)

• I ___ like tea.
• She ___ work on Sundays.
• They ___ understand the lesson.
• He ___ play mobile games.

👉 Do not change the verb
👉 Choose only do / does

Confidence Tip:
If you control negative sentences, your English has already moved to the next level.

✔ What You Should Feel After Day 3

• I can form negative sentences clearly
• I know when to use do / does
• My spoken English mistakes have reduced
