Introduction

Many English learners make small mistakes while speaking. These small errors change the meaning and affect fluency. In this lesson, we correct the most common mistakes and explain the rules clearly. Each sentence includes English correction, Tamil meaning, and pronunciation.


1. I didn’t go to school yesterday.

Incorrect: I didn’t went to school yesterday.
Correct: I didn’t go to school yesterday.

✔ Explanation

After “didn’t”, always use base verb (go, come, eat). Never use “went / came / ate” after “didn’t”.

✔ Tamil Meaning

நான் நேற்று பள்ளிக்குப் போகவில்லை.

Pronunciation: nān nēṟṟu paḷḷikkup pōgavillai.


2. She has finished her homework.

Incorrect: She finished her homework now.
Correct: She has finished her homework.

✔ Explanation

Use present perfect (has/have + V3) when the action was completed recently and has a result in the present moment.

✔ Tamil Meaning

அவள் தன் வீட்டுப்பாடத்தை முடித்துவிட்டாள்.

Pronunciation: avaḷ than vīṭṭupāḍattai muḍiththuviṭṭāḷ.


3. They are playing outside now.

Incorrect: They play outside now.
Correct: They are playing outside now.

✔ Explanation

Use “am/is/are + verb-ing” for actions that are happening at this very moment.

✔ Tamil Meaning

அவர்கள் இப்போது வெளியே விளையாடுகிறார்கள்.

Pronunciation: avargaḷ ippōdhu veḷiyē viḷaiyāḍugirārgaḷ.


4. I have been studying for two hours.

Incorrect: I am studying for two hours.
Correct: I have been studying for two hours.

✔ Explanation

Use present perfect continuous (have/has been + verb-ing) for actions that started earlier and are still continuing now.

✔ Tamil Meaning

நான் இரண்டு மணி நேரமாக படித்து வருகிறேன்.

Pronunciation: nān iraṇḍu maṇi nēramāga paḍiththu varugirēn.


5. He will meet you tomorrow.

Incorrect: He meet you tomorrow.
Correct: He will meet you tomorrow.

✔ Explanation

Use “will + base verb” for future actions, plans, and decisions.

✔ Tamil Meaning

அவன் நாளை உன்னை சந்திப்பான்.

Pronunciation: avan nāḷai unnai sandhikkapān.

1. Use of DIDN’T

Rule: After “didn’t”, always use verb base form.
Examples: didn’t eat, didn’t go, didn’t speak.

Tamil: “didn’t”க்கு பிறகு verb எப்போதும் first form-லேயே இருக்கும்.

2. Use of HAS/HAVE + V3

Used for actions completed recently with current effect.

Tamil: இப்போது முடிந்த செயல்களுக்கு பயன்படுத்தப்படும்.

3. Use of AM/IS/ARE + V-ing

Used for actions happening right now.

Tamil: நடந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் செயலைக் காட்டும்.

4. Use of WILL

Used for future plans, promises, predictions.

Tamil: எதிர்கால செயலைக் காட்டும்.
