What is Past Continuous Tense?
Past Continuous Tense is used to describe:
- An action that was happening in the past
- An action that was in progress at a specific past time
๐ Focus is NOT on completion
๐ Focus is on continuity (ongoing action) in the past
Core Structure (Golden Formula)
Subject + was / were + verb + ing

✍️ Simple Examples (Understand Slowly)
- I was reading a book.
- She was cooking food.
- They were playing cricket.
- We were watching TV.
๐ These actions were going on at a past time.
Using Time Reference
Past Continuous is often used with time expressions like:
- at 7 PM yesterday
- at that time
- when I called
- while he was sleeping
Examples:
• I was studying at 10 PM yesterday.
• She was sleeping when I called her.
• They were working while we were resting.
Past Continuous vs Simple Past

Key Identification Trick
If a sentence answers the question:
“What was happening at that time?”

Common Beginner Mistakes

✅ I was reading a book. - ❌ They

✅ They were playing. - ❌ She was cooking food yesterday night (OK only if action was ongoing)
Practice (Think First)
