Today you will learn how to form positive sentences in Past Continuous Tense with full clarity and confidence.

  • Differentiate Past Continuous from Simple Past

Core Structure (Revision)

Subject + was / were + Verb + ing

๐Ÿ‘‰ This structure is the foundation of all positive sentences.


✍️ Basic Positive Sentences

  • I was reading a book.
  • She was cooking food.
  • He was working late.
  • We were watching a movie.
  • They were playing cricket.

๐Ÿ‘‰ These sentences show actions that were in progress in the past.


 Using Time Expressions

Past Continuous is often used with time expressions like:

  • at 7 PM
  • at that time
  • yesterday evening
  • last night
  • when / while

Examples:

  • I was studying at 10 PM.
  • She was talking on the phone yesterday evening.
  • They were travelling last night.

Past Continuous vs Simple Past

Sentence Meaning
I studied English. Completed action
I was studying English. Action in progress

 Using “When” and “While”

Past Continuous is commonly used with when and while.

  • I was sleeping when the phone rang.
  • She was cooking while he was cleaning.
  • They were walking when it started raining.

 Common Positive Sentence Mistakes

  • ❌ I was play football.
    ✅ I was playing football.
  • ❌ They was watching TV.
    ✅ They were watching TV.
  • ❌ She was write a letter.
    ✅ She was writing a letter.

When NOT to Use Past Continuous

  • For completed actions → use Simple Past
  • For habits → use Simple Past
  • For facts → do NOT use Past Continuous

Example:

  • ❌ I was knowing the answer.
  • ✅ I knew the answer.
