Past Continuous Tense – Day 1

Basic Concept & Foundation

By the end of this lesson, you will clearly understand:

  • What Past Continuous Tense means
  • When and why it is used
  • How it is different from Simple Past
  • How to identify Past Continuous sentences easily

๐ŸŒฑ What is Past Continuous Tense?

Past Continuous Tense is used to describe:

  • An action that was happening in the past
  • An action that was in progress at a specific past time

๐Ÿ‘‰ Focus is NOT on completion
๐Ÿ‘‰ Focus is on continuity (ongoing action) in the past


Core Structure (Golden Formula)

Subject + was / were + verb + ing

Subject Helping Verb
I / He / She / It was
You / We / They were

✍️ Simple Examples (Understand Slowly)

  • I was reading a book.
  • She was cooking food.
  • They were playing cricket.
  • We were watching TV.

๐Ÿ‘‰ These actions were going on at a past time.


⏰ Using Time Reference

Past Continuous is often used with time expressions like:

  • at 7 PM yesterday
  • at that time
  • when I called
  • while he was sleeping

Examples:
• I was studying at 10 PM yesterday.
• She was sleeping when I called her.
• They were working while we were resting.


 Past Continuous vs Simple Past

Sentence Meaning
I ate food. Completed action
I was eating food. Action in progress

 Key Identification Trick

If a sentence answers the question:

“What was happening at that time?”

 Common Beginner Mistakes

  • ❌ I was read a book.
    ✅ I was reading a book.
  • ❌ They was playing.
    ✅ They were playing.
  • ❌ She was cooking food yesterday night (OK only if action was ongoing)

  2. They ______ (play) when it started raining.
  3. She ______ (write) a letter at that time.
